simply amazing, always for you.
In a case straight out of the unusual, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers made an extraordinary discovery during a routine traffic stop on State Route 99 near Madera on Monday night. The driver, identified as 27-year-old Ali Mused Adel Mohamed, was arrested for driving under the influence in his 2022 Rolls Royce Ghost. But what really caught the officers’ attention was the peculiar passenger riding shotgun—a one-month-old spider monkey dressed in a pink onesie.

The Incident
Officers initially stopped the vehicle for speeding. Upon approaching the car, they detected signs of intoxication and began an investigation. During the search of the vehicle, officers uncovered a substantial quantity of marijuana believed to be intended for distribution. However, it was the sight of the tiny primate, seated in the front of the luxury car, that took the traffic stop to another level.
Illegal Possession of Exotic Animal
Spider monkeys, native to Central and South America, are among the animals prohibited from private ownership in California due to their complex needs and potential risks to public safety and health. The discovery of the young primate in Mohamed’s possession led to additional charges, including illegal possession of an exotic animal.
“Primates are illegal to own as pets in California,” stated the CHP in a social media post following the incident. “The monkey was safely taken by Animal Control, where he will receive proper care. Some next-level monkey business!”
Monkey Relocated to Safe Custody
After its rescue, the baby monkey was initially cared for at the Madera Animal Shelter, where it was given food, including mashed bananas. On Tuesday, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife transferred the primate to the Oakland Zoo. Officials there confirmed they were prepared to meet the specific needs of the young spider monkey, emphasizing the importance of proper care for exotic animals.
Legal and Ethical Concerns
Animal welfare experts and state officials reiterated the dangers of owning exotic animals like spider monkeys. “These animals have specialized dietary, social, and environmental requirements that cannot be met in a home setting,” a spokesperson for the Oakland Zoo stated. “Keeping them as pets not only jeopardizes their health and well-being but also poses significant risks to public safety.”
Charges and Consequences
Mohamed now faces a slew of charges, including driving under the influence, possession of cannabis for sale, and illegal possession of an exotic animal. His arrest has reignited discussions about the ethical and legal implications of owning exotic animals, as well as the broader dangers of impaired driving.
A Strange Night to Remember
While traffic stops are a common part of law enforcement duties, this incident stands out as a stark reminder of the unexpected challenges officers can face. The CHP concluded their social media update with a lighthearted nod to the bizarre nature of the case: “You never know what you’ll find on the road. This was definitely one for the books.”
The rescued monkey is now on its way to a brighter future, while the driver awaits legal proceedings that will determine the outcome of his unusual night on California’s highways.
