Spread the love

Scene: A quiet park bench under a large oak tree. Two boys, Sam and Ethan, sit next to each other, both holding their phones, staring at the same picture that has completely changed everything. Their faces are a mixture of shock, confusion, and anger as they try to process what they’ve just discovered.]

Sam:
(After a long, heavy pause, speaks first)
You saw it too, right? The picture?

Ethan:
(Looks over at Sam, rubbing his forehead)
Yeah. Saw it. I mean… what the hell are we supposed to do with this? How is this even possible?

Sam:
(Shaking his head)
It’s real, Ethan. This is real. I thought it was a prank at first, like one of those stupid things people do to mess with you, but… it’s not. I mean, we’ve been seeing the same girl. For two years.

Ethan:
(Pulls his phone back up, swiping through images of her)
Two years. I… I don’t even know what to say. I honestly thought I was the only one. She said I was the one, Sam. She talked about the future. She told me we were gonna get married after college.

Sam:
(Bitter laugh)
Yeah, she told me the same thing. Same exact thing. I thought I was the only one she was serious about. I was planning on proposing soon. I had the whole thing set up, you know?

Ethan:
(Looks down at his phone again, his face tight with disbelief)
She told me the same. She said she wanted to live together, get a dog, travel the world. Hell, we even talked about picking out furniture for our apartment. She was so convincing.

Sam:
(Nods grimly, glancing away)
Yeah, it’s like she had us both in the palm of her hand. And we—(exhales sharply) we never saw it coming. How did we not see it? How did she pull this off?

Ethan:
(Voice shaking with frustration)
I don’t know. I mean, I thought… maybe it was just me, but everything she said felt so real. So sincere. I—I didn’t even think to question it.

Sam:
(Quietly)
Me neither. She knew exactly what to say. She knew how to make me feel like I was the most important thing in her life. Hell, I even believed it.

Ethan:
(Scoffs, looks out at the park, as if looking for answers in the trees)
I don’t even know what to do now. What happens to us? We’ve both been made fools of. Does she just… get away with it?

Sam:
(Furrows his brow, his voice rising with frustration)
I don’t know, man. I don’t even know what to think anymore. I—(pauses, trying to calm himself) I was gonna ask her to marry me. I had the ring already. I even picked out the spot. I thought we were ready. And now—this.

Ethan:
(Shaking his head)
She got you too, huh? She made you feel like you were the only one. You were gonna ask her to marry you, and I… I was about to do the same thing. We were on the same path. It’s just… messed up.

Sam:
(Quietly, a bit defeated)
How do we even look at her the same way again? How do we go back and act like everything’s fine when we know we’re both just… part of her game?

Ethan:
(Looks away, gritting his teeth)
I don’t know. I don’t even want to see her right now. She lied to both of us for two years. I feel like we should confront her. Ask her how the hell she thought she could get away with this.

Sam:
(Tightens his jaw)
Yeah. We should. But part of me doesn’t even want to hear whatever excuse she has. I’m done hearing her say she “didn’t mean for it to happen” or that “it was just a mistake.” We both know that’s bullshit.

Ethan:
(Laughs bitterly)
“Just a mistake?” Yeah, right. How do you accidentally date two guys for two years? How does that even happen?

Sam:
(Sighs heavily, leaning back on the bench)
She probably told each of us what we wanted to hear. Played us off of each other. I don’t even think she cared about us. Not really.

Ethan:
(Muttering, half to himself)
She probably just wanted to have the perfect guy for every occasion. You know, the romantic one, the adventurous one, the stable one. Whatever suited her mood.

Sam:
(Grimaces)
Well, mission accomplished for her, I guess. I’m just… I don’t know if I want to keep wasting my time thinking about this.

Ethan:
(Looks at Sam seriously)
But we can’t let her get away with it. We can’t just act like it’s not a big deal. She messed with us. Both of us. And we deserve an explanation.

Sam:
(Shrugs, looking up at the sky)
I don’t know if I want an explanation. I’m angry, yeah, but I don’t know if I care enough to fight for it. I’m not sure I even want her in my life anymore.

Ethan:
(Nods slowly, staring off into the distance)
You might be right. But we still deserve to know what happened. I mean, how did it get this far? She had to know, at some point, it was going to come out.

Sam:
(Exhales)
I guess she just didn’t care. (Pause) You ever wonder if she’s been talking to other guys, too? Or if we’re just the two suckers who didn’t notice?

Ethan:
(Shrugs, half-smiling darkly)
Honestly, man, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was. Who knows how many others there are?

Sam:
(Glances over at Ethan, half-laughing)
What if we just—what if we show up at her place, together, and ask her straight up? Make her explain it to both of us at once.

Ethan:
(Grins, a little wild)
Two against one. I like those odds. She can’t lie her way out of that.

Sam:
(Chuckles)
You’re right. Let’s see if she’s still got the guts to lie to both of us at once.

Ethan:
(Nods, then after a beat, his smile fades)
I don’t know, Sam. I guess part of me thought she was the one. I never thought I’d be sitting here with you, realizing we’ve both been played.

Sam:
(Leans back, staring at the clouds)
I thought she was the one too. But now… I don’t know. I’m starting to think maybe the real “one” is someone who doesn’t lie to you for two years.

Ethan:
(Claps Sam on the back, standing up)
You’re right. Whatever happens, we move on from this. Together.

Sam:
(Standing, looking determined)
Yeah. Together.

[They walk away from the bench, their thoughts heavy but their steps sure. Both knowing the confrontation they’re about to have won’t be easy, but somehow feeling a little lighter now that they’re in this together.]
