Greg Gumbel, the legendary sportscaster who spent more than five decades at the forefront of sports broadcasting, has passed away at the age of 78. According to a statement from his family, Gumbel died peacefully on December 27, 2024, surrounded by loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer.

His wife, Marcy Gumbel, and daughter, Michelle Gumbel, shared in a joint statement released by CBS Sports that their beloved husband and father approached his illness “with stoicism, grace, and positivity.” They praised his strength during his final days, stating that he faced his condition with the same determination and dignity that defined his legendary career.

Gumbel’s broadcast career spanned over five decades, making him one of the most respected voices in sports journalism. Known for his insightful commentary and calm professionalism, he became a household name as a play-by-play announcer for CBS, NBC, and ESPN. His work covered a broad spectrum of sports, from the NFL and NCAA basketball to the Super Bowl and the Olympic Games.

A trailblazer in the industry, Gumbel made history in 2001 when he became the first African-American announcer to call play-by-play for a major U.S. sports championship—Super Bowl XXXV. His groundbreaking achievement helped pave the way for future generations of broadcasters in a predominantly white industry.

Off-camera, Gumbel was equally as committed to giving back to his community. He was a passionate advocate for charitable organizations such as St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the March of Dimes, dedicating much of his time to supporting causes close to his heart.

The sportscaster’s passing has left a profound impact on both the sports world and the broadcasting community, where he was admired not only for his professional skill but also for his kindness and generosity. His brother, Bryant Gumbel, himself a celebrated television personality, expressed his heartfelt condolences, remembering Greg as a man of integrity who always prioritized his family and his work.

Greg Gumbel is survived by his wife, Marcy, daughter, Michelle, and his brother Bryant. His legacy, however, will continue to live on through the countless moments of sports history he helped bring to life, as well as the many lives he touched during his remarkable career.

The sports world has lost a true icon, but Gumbel’s contributions to the industry will forever be remembered.
