Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has sharply criticized President William Ruto’s recent Cabinet reshuffle, describing it as an attempt by the President to secure political survival rather than address the country’s urgent challenges. In a statement made earlier this week, Kalonzo suggested that Ruto’s appointments, which included a number of allies from former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s camp, were part of a political maneuver aimed at consolidating power.

Kalonzo highlighted that this reshuffle mirrored Ruto’s earlier approach with allies of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who are affiliated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The Wiper leader accused the President of appointing figures loyal to his personal and political interests, rather than prioritizing governance based on merit and the needs of the Kenyan people.

In his remarks, Kalonzo emphasized that political alliances forged with the intention of Cabinet appointments would only serve to undermine the integrity of the country’s political institutions. He expressed his disapproval of what he termed as “bread-based” rather than “broad-based” leadership, further accusing the government of sidelining ordinary citizens in favor of political elites.

Criticism of Ruto’s administration has been mounting over the past few months, with opposition leaders, including Kalonzo, pointing out the negative impacts of the current government’s policies. High taxes, a growing cost of living, and the government’s alleged failure to deliver on its promises of better service provision have been the primary issues raised by critics.

Kalonzo’s concerns were echoed by the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), which also condemned the reshuffle, claiming that it violated constitutional provisions on ethnic and gender balance. The KHRC argued that the appointments were skewed toward a narrow elite group, contradicting Ruto’s campaign promises of inclusivity and a “hustler” administration. The organization further suggested that the reshuffle was an attempt to perpetuate the political status quo, contrary to the President’s pledges to reform the system.

The Cabinet reshuffle, which was quickly approved, has sparked intense debates across the country, with many Kenyans questioning the direction of the current leadership. As Kalonzo and other opposition figures voice their discontent, the political landscape remains tense, with calls for greater accountability and leadership that reflects the diverse needs of the Kenyan population.

As the government faces mounting pressure, it remains to be seen whether these criticisms will prompt any changes or whether President Ruto will continue with his current political strategies. The unfolding political drama marks a crucial period in Kenya’s governance, as the public and opposition continue to demand more from their leaders.
