San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy left Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions after taking a hard hit to his arm, raising concerns for his immediate and long-term health. The injury marks the latest in a series of setbacks for Purdy, who has already been dealing with shoulder issues earlier this season.

Purdy, who had declared his arm “100 percent healthy” ahead of the Week 17 matchup, appeared to suffer the injury in the third quarter after being hit by a Lions defender. The severity of the injury is still unclear, but the timing could not be worse for the 49ers, who are fighting for a strong playoff position.

This is not Purdy’s first injury scare. Earlier in the 2024 season, the 49ers quarterback dealt with soreness in his throwing shoulder, which sidelined him for a critical game against the Green Bay Packers in November. MRI scans showed no structural damage at that time, but the lingering discomfort raised doubts about his long-term durability.

“I feel great, my arm is 100 percent healthy,” Purdy said in a statement before the game, eager to silence any concerns about his previous injuries. His confidence appeared justified as he returned to form in recent games, despite a subpar performance against the Buffalo Bills. However, Sunday’s injury serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of the quarterback position.

Purdy’s injury history dates back to the NFC Championship Game in January 2023, where a brutal hit by Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick tore his UCL in his throwing elbow, ultimately requiring surgery and months of rehabilitation. While his recovery from that injury seemed to be progressing well, this latest setback has cast doubt on his ability to stay healthy through the playoffs.

As of now, the 49ers have yet to provide an official update on Purdy’s current condition. The team is likely awaiting further medical evaluation before making any announcements regarding his status for future games.

The 49ers will now have to prepare for the possibility of proceeding without their starting quarterback, with backup options in place. For Purdy, the injury comes at a critical juncture in the season, and his future availability for the 49ers’ playoff run remains uncertain.
