LOS ANGELES – A rapidly spreading wildfire, dubbed the Sunset Fire, erupted Wednesday evening near Runyon Canyon Park in the Hollywood Hills, forcing residents to evacuate as fierce winds drove the flames dangerously close to homes.

The fire, first reported around 5:45 p.m., quickly grew to over 10 acres, fueled by dry vegetation and gusty conditions brought on by a powerful windstorm that swept through Southern California earlier in the day. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) established an evacuation zone bordered by the 101 Freeway, Laurel Canyon Boulevard, Mulholland Drive, and Hollywood Boulevard.

In a statement, the LAFD described the situation as “extremely fluid,” noting that firefighting crews were working tirelessly to contain the blaze and protect threatened structures. As of late Wednesday, no injuries or damage to property had been reported, though containment remained uncertain.

Runyon Canyon Park, a popular hiking destination, was preemptively closed earlier in the day due to the heightened fire risk brought on by the windstorm. Authorities cited the dangerous combination of high winds, dry brush, and low humidity as a recipe for rapid fire spread across the region.

Residents in the affected evacuation zone were urged to leave immediately and seek shelter in safe areas. Evacuation centers were set up to assist those displaced, and officials advised the public to stay tuned to updates from local authorities.

This fire is part of a troubling trend across Southern California, where multiple wildfires have erupted over the past week. In addition to the Sunset Fire, the Palisades and Eaton fires have already scorched large areas, leading to significant evacuations and property losses in other parts of Los Angeles County.

Emergency responders continue to monitor the situation, emphasizing the importance of preparedness as fire season intensifies. Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed support for affected communities, promising additional resources to combat the ongoing threat.

For the latest updates, residents are encouraged to monitor official channels, including the LAFD website and social media accounts.

“Our first priority is ensuring everyone’s safety,” an LAFD spokesperson said. “We thank the community for their cooperation during these challenging times.”
