SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — April 9, 2025 — A devastating nightclub roof collapse during a live merengue concert has claimed the lives of at least 113 people, including two former Major League Baseball players and a provincial governor, in one of the worst tragedies in the Dominican Republic’s recent history.

The disaster occurred around 1 a.m. Tuesday at the iconic Jet Set nightclub in the heart of the capital. The venue, a popular hotspot for celebrities, athletes, and politicians, was hosting a highly anticipated performance when the roof suddenly gave way, trapping hundreds of guests beneath debris.

Authorities confirmed that former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel, 51, and ex-MLB player Tony Blanco, 43, were among those killed. Both had extensive careers in professional baseball, with Dotel having played for 13 different MLB teams over 15 seasons and earning a World Series ring with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011. Blanco had a brief stint with the Washington Nationals in 2005 before achieving success in Japan’s professional league.

Tragically, Nelsy Cruz, the sitting governor of Monte Cristi province and the sister of MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz, also perished in the collapse. The death of the prominent public official adds to the national mourning, as condolences pour in from across the country and around the world.

The performance was headlined by legendary merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who was also killed. The concert had drawn a large crowd, including many well-known public figures, turning the popular event into a catastrophic scene in mere seconds.

At least 255 others were injured, some critically, as emergency responders worked through the early hours to rescue survivors and recover bodies. Rescue efforts continued into Wednesday as crews combed the wreckage for those still unaccounted for.

The cause of the collapse is under active investigation. While structural failure is suspected, officials have not ruled out the possibility of negligence or design flaws. Initial reports suggest the building may have been over capacity at the time of the event.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred issued a statement expressing the league’s grief:

“Major League Baseball is deeply saddened by the passings of Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco, Nelsy Cruz, and all the victims of last night’s tragedy in Santo Domingo. We send our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of all those who have been affected and to our colleague Nelson and his entire family.”

The Dominican Republic, a country known for its deep love of baseball and vibrant music scene, has been left reeling. A period of national mourning has been declared, and flags were lowered to half-staff across the country.

As the nation grieves, tributes have poured in from former teammates, fellow musicians, government officials, and fans alike. Vigils and memorials are being organized throughout Santo Domingo and beyond, as the community begins the long process of healing.

This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the importance of infrastructure safety and the fragility of life, especially in moments meant for joy and celebration.
