DETROIT – Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey was having a career year, but his promising season has been thrown into uncertainty after a frightening injury during the Pistons’ 105-96 victory over the Orlando Magic on January 1, 2025.

Ivey, the fifth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, has been a key player for Detroit this season, averaging 17.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. His performance on Wednesday evening had once again proven his importance, as he led the Pistons with 22 points.

However, his standout effort was overshadowed by a harrowing incident in the fourth quarter. With just under 10 minutes left in the game, a loose ball sent both Ivey and Magic guard Cole Anthony diving for possession. As Anthony slipped and lost his footing, his momentum led him to collide with Ivey’s planted left leg, causing a sickening twist that left Ivey writhing on the floor in obvious pain.

The scene immediately halted play, with several players from both teams surrounding Ivey as medical staff rushed to attend to him. The severity of the injury was evident as trainers worked to stabilize his leg. Replay footage revealed that Ivey’s left ankle was bent at an unnatural angle, adding to the concern.

After a lengthy delay, Ivey was stretchered off the court, and a towel was draped over his injury as he left the arena. The atmosphere in the arena was tense, and both Pistons and Magic players appeared shaken by the incident.

Although the Pistons secured the victory, it was bittersweet. The team has not yet provided an official update on the extent of Ivey’s injury, but fans and analysts alike are holding their breath for news. His injury could potentially sideline him for an extended period, depending on the severity of the damage.

Before the injury, Ivey had been one of the driving forces behind Detroit’s success. His scoring, court vision, and defense had contributed significantly to the Pistons’ recent form, including this fourth win in their last five games. Alongside Ivey, Cade Cunningham continued to shine with 19 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds, while Jalen Duren added a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Pistons will now look to their medical team for answers as they await further evaluations of Ivey’s condition. The team has expressed optimism, but the nature of the injury leaves room for concern.

For now, the Pistons will move forward, hoping for a speedy recovery for their star guard, whose development had been a bright spot in an otherwise difficult season.
