NABADO

simply amazing, always for you.

The alarm rang at exactly 5:30 a.m.

Like every other weekday, James Otieno stretched his arm from beneath the blanket and slapped the snooze button without opening his eyes. Outside, Nairobi was slowly waking up. The distant sound of matatus, barking dogs, and early morning vendors blended into the familiar soundtrack of another ordinary day.

At least, that’s what James believed.

Nothing felt unusual.

Nothing felt important.

Nothing hinted that within a few hours, his entire life would change forever.

James rolled out of bed, walked into the kitchen, and prepared a quick cup of tea. His wife, Susan, was still asleep. Their two children would wake up later for school.

The routine never changed.

Wake up.

Prepare breakfast.

Drive to work.

Return home.

Sleep.

Repeat.

At thirty-eight years old, James had settled into a life of predictability. Some people called it stability. Others called it boring.

For him, it was simply life.

He worked as an accountant for a logistics company in the city center. The job paid the bills, supported his family, and provided enough comfort to keep serious worries away.

Still, deep down, James often felt something was missing.

Years earlier, he had dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur.

He wanted to build a business.

Travel.

Create opportunities.

Leave a legacy.

Instead, responsibilities arrived faster than opportunities.

Marriage.

Children.

Loans.

School fees.

Medical bills.

Life happened.

Dreams slowly moved to the background.

Every now and then, he would think about them, usually late at night when the house was quiet. But by morning, reality always returned.

That Tuesday seemed no different.

After breakfast, he kissed Susan goodbye and drove toward the city.

Traffic was heavier than usual.

Drivers honked impatiently.

Street vendors moved between vehicles selling newspapers, water bottles, and snacks.

James checked the clock.

He was running ten minutes late.

Again.

Nothing unusual.

As he parked outside his office building, his phone vibrated.

A promotional message from a mobile network.

He ignored it.

Another ordinary interruption in an ordinary day.

Inside the office, emails flooded his inbox.

Meetings filled his calendar.

Invoices waited for approval.

By 11 a.m., he was buried in spreadsheets.

The world outside seemed distant.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

James frowned.

Normally, he ignored unknown callers during working hours.

But something made him hesitate.

The phone continued ringing.

He picked up.

“Hello?”

The voice on the other end sounded nervous.

“Am I speaking to James Otieno?”

“Yes.”

There was a brief pause.

The kind of pause that instantly changes the atmosphere.

The kind that makes your stomach tighten before you even know why.

The caller cleared his throat.

“My name is David. I believe I’m your cousin.”

James blinked.

“Cousin?”

“Yes. I know this might sound strange.”

James sat upright.

He had never heard of any cousin named David.

His family was relatively small.

At least, that’s what he thought.

“What is this about?” James asked cautiously.

Another pause.

Then came the sentence that would divide his life into two parts.

The life before the call.

And the life after it.

“James,” the man said softly, “your grandfather left something behind before he died. We’ve been trying to find you for years.”

For a moment, James thought it was a scam.

His grandfather had died nearly twenty years earlier.

Why would anyone suddenly contact him now?

And why had they been looking for him?

The office around him seemed to disappear.

The noise.

The conversations.

The clicking keyboards.

Everything faded.

“What exactly are you talking about?” James asked.

David took a deep breath.

“Your grandfather owned land.”

James laughed nervously.

“So?”

“It wasn’t ordinary land.”

Now James was confused.

“What do you mean?”

The answer came slowly.

As if even David understood how unbelievable it sounded.

“The land is now worth hundreds of millions.”

Silence.

James couldn’t speak.

His mind rejected the information instantly.

Hundreds of millions?

It sounded absurd.

Impossible.

Ridiculous.

Yet something in David’s voice sounded genuine.

Not excited.

Not manipulative.

Just serious.

Very serious.

“You have the wrong person,” James said.

“No,” David replied.

“We found the records.”

The next thirty minutes felt surreal.

David explained that James’s grandfather had owned several acres on the outskirts of Nairobi decades earlier.

At the time, the area had little value.

Most people considered it useless farmland.

Over the years, however, rapid development transformed the region into one of the most valuable real estate corridors in the country.

Shopping centers emerged.

Residential estates appeared.

Investors arrived.

Land prices exploded.

And buried within old family records was documentation connecting a portion of that property directly to James’s branch of the family.

A branch everyone had lost contact with.

Until now.

When the call finally ended, James sat motionless.

The spreadsheet on his computer screen remained open.

But he couldn’t see it anymore.

His hands trembled slightly.

Was this real?

Could an ordinary Tuesday suddenly become the most important day of his life?

The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur.

He made mistakes.

Forgot appointments.

Missed deadlines.

His colleagues noticed.

“You okay?” one of them asked.

James forced a smile.

“Just tired.”

But he wasn’t tired.

He was stunned.

By evening, he drove home in silence.

The radio remained off.

Traffic barely registered.

Questions raced through his mind.

What if it was true?

What if it wasn’t?

What if everything changed?

And perhaps the most frightening question of all:

What if he had ignored the call?

When he arrived home, Susan immediately noticed something was wrong.

“You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

James sat down.

For several seconds, he simply stared at her.

Then he said four words.

“We need to talk.”

Susan’s expression changed instantly.

“What happened?”

James took a deep breath.

“A stranger called me today.”

Susan waited.

“He says our lives are about to change.”

At first, she laughed.

Then James explained everything.

The cousin.

The land.

The inheritance.

The documents.

The search that had lasted years.

As the story unfolded, her smile disappeared.

By the end, neither of them knew what to think.

Excitement battled skepticism.

Hope battled fear.

Because sometimes the biggest opportunities arrive disguised as impossible stories.

And sometimes the most ordinary day becomes the beginning of an extraordinary chapter.

Neither James nor Susan slept much that night.

Neither realized that the phone call was only the beginning.

The real shock was still coming.

And when the truth finally emerged, it would reveal something far more valuable than money.

Something that would teach James a lesson he would carry for the rest of his life.

A lesson about family.

About time.

About second chances.

And about how a single phone call can change everything.

To be continued…
