Kenya’s opposition politics appears to be entering a new phase after a recent opinion poll indicated a shift in public support among leading figures eyeing the 2027 General Election.

The survey, conducted by Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA), shows that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has, for the first time, overtaken Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka in national popularity rankings among opposition politicians. The findings also suggest that many opposition supporters would prefer former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to play the role of a political kingmaker rather than contest the presidency himself.

According to the poll, President William Ruto remains the most preferred presidential candidate nationally, but attention has increasingly turned to the battle for leadership within the opposition camp.

Sifuna emerged as one of the biggest gainers in the survey, reflecting his growing profile in national politics. The outspoken Nairobi senator has in recent months become one of the most visible opposition voices, regularly criticizing government policies and championing issues affecting ordinary Kenyans.

Political analysts say Sifuna’s rise may be linked to his ability to connect with younger voters and maintain a strong media presence. His increasing popularity now places him among key figures who could shape the opposition’s strategy ahead of the next election.

The poll also showed a decline in support for Kalonzo Musyoka, who has long been viewed as one of the opposition’s senior leaders and a potential presidential contender. While Kalonzo remains an influential figure, the latest findings suggest that voter preferences within the opposition are beginning to shift.

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i also featured prominently in the survey, underlining the growing competition among leaders seeking to rally support against President Ruto’s administration.

For Rigathi Gachagua, the findings paint a different picture. Although his personal presidential ratings were lower than some of his rivals, many opposition supporters reportedly believe his greatest value lies in helping unite the opposition rather than entering the race directly.

Supporters who favor this approach argue that Gachagua’s political influence, particularly in the Mt Kenya region, could be crucial in determining the opposition’s chances in 2027. They believe his endorsement of a single candidate could help avoid divisions and strengthen efforts to challenge the ruling coalition.

The idea of Gachagua acting as a kingmaker reflects growing calls for opposition unity. In previous elections, multiple candidates have often split votes, weakening the opposition’s ability to present a strong challenge.

The poll also found that a significant number of voters remain undecided, suggesting that the political landscape could still change considerably before campaigns officially begin.

As Kenya moves closer to the 2027 elections, the latest survey points to an evolving opposition scene where new faces are gaining ground, established leaders are reassessing their strategies, and coalition-building may ultimately determine who emerges as the strongest challenger to President Ruto.

With political alliances expected to shift in the coming months, the contest for opposition leadership remains wide open, and the role of influential figures such as Gachagua could prove decisive in shaping the country’s next electoral battle.
