We aint done yet… Expect another one.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement is entering a critical new phase, with its leadership expected to hold a strategic retreat in Machakos as preparations intensify for a legal battle over the registration of its political party ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The retreat, scheduled to begin on Sunday at Stoni Athi Hotel in Machakos County, is expected to bring together key figures in the movement to review its political progress, assess recent setbacks and map out the next phase of its nationwide mobilisation campaign.

The meeting comes at a politically sensitive moment for the movement, which has been expanding its footprint across Kenya while facing growing resistance and questions surrounding the formal registration of a political vehicle linked to its Linda Mwananchi brand.

Court battle looms over party registration

The Linda Mwananchi camp is reportedly preparing to pursue legal options over challenges affecting the registration of its party.

The issue has become increasingly urgent as political formations position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. Recent reports indicate that Sifuna’s allies are racing against time to secure a formal political vehicle, although the senator has sought to play down concerns over the registration difficulties.

For the movement, the legal fight could determine how quickly it transforms from a nationwide political mobilisation campaign into a fully established electoral force.

The Machakos retreat is therefore expected to go beyond ordinary political consultations, with leaders likely to examine both the legal and organisational challenges facing the movement.

Homa Bay violence still casts a shadow

The strategic meeting comes just days after Linda Mwananchi’s controversial tour of Homa Bay County, where political activities were disrupted by violence and heightened tension.

The August 16 rally had been planned as part of the movement’s wider grassroots mobilisation campaign. Ahead of the event, organisers had notified police and said they had received assurances that security would be provided.

However, the tour was marked by road blockades, burning tyres and other disruptions, underlining the intense political contest surrounding the movement’s growing influence in parts of Nyanza.

The unrest is likely to feature prominently during the Machakos discussions as the team evaluates security arrangements, political messaging and how to protect future gatherings from disruption.

The Homa Bay incident has also intensified the political debate over the struggle for influence within the broader ODM political landscape and in regions traditionally considered party strongholds.

Meru becomes the next political test

Despite the violence in Homa Bay, Sifuna and his allies appear determined to maintain the movement’s nationwide momentum.

The Linda Mwananchi movement has announced that its next major rally will be held in Meru County on Sunday, August 30, with the exact venue and programme still expected to be communicated.

The Meru event will be closely watched as the movement attempts to extend its influence into the Mt Kenya region, where political competition is expected to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.

The announcement also signals that the Homa Bay violence has not forced the movement to slow down.

Instead, the Machakos retreat could become the platform from which Linda Mwananchi recalibrates its strategy before launching the next stage of its national campaign.

A movement seeking to become a national force

Linda Mwananchi has already held political activities in several counties, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Vihiga, Kisumu, Machakos, Thika, Kisii, Taita Taveta, Trans Nzoia, Bungoma and Homa Bay, according to the movement’s published events record.

The nationwide approach reflects an attempt to build a broad political network rather than remain confined to traditional opposition strongholds.

But the movement now faces a more complicated challenge: converting public rallies and grassroots enthusiasm into a sustainable political structure capable of contesting the 2027 General Election.

That challenge makes the Machakos retreat particularly significant.

With a possible court battle ahead, political tensions still simmering after Homa Bay and another major rally approaching in Meru, Sifuna’s team is under pressure to demonstrate that Linda Mwananchi can survive not only the excitement of political rallies but also the legal, organisational and security battles that come with becoming a serious national political force.

For now, all eyes will be on Machakos as the movement’s leaders decide their next move.
