Kenya has intensified its Ebola preparedness measures as health authorities work to shield the country from a growing outbreak affecting parts of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Despite rising concern across the region, the Ministry of Health has reassured Kenyans that no confirmed Ebola case has been recorded in the country. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale told Parliament that all suspected alerts investigated so far have tested negative, even as surveillance efforts are expanded nationwide.
The government has activated its National Ebola Incident Management System, a coordinated response mechanism designed to detect, monitor and contain any potential outbreak before it spreads. Enhanced screening is currently underway at airports, border crossings and other entry points into the country.
According to the Ministry of Health, more than 71,000 travelers had been screened by early June, while recent reports indicate that over 100,000 travelers have now undergone health checks as authorities tighten border surveillance. In addition, 22 Ebola alerts reported across nine counties, including Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru and Bungoma, were investigated and all returned negative results. More than 50 laboratory samples linked to suspected cases and travelers from affected countries have also tested negative.
The heightened vigilance comes as the Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain continues to spread in neighboring countries. The World Health Organization has warned that the strain poses unique challenges because there is currently no approved vaccine specifically designed for it.
To strengthen readiness, Kenya has trained over 1,000 healthcare workers in Ebola response protocols and placed a reserve team of 241 emergency response specialists on standby for rapid deployment. Isolation and treatment facilities have also been designated in key hospitals, including Kenyatta National Hospital and the National Police Service Hospital.
The government is further conducting preparedness drills in high-risk counties, particularly those along major transport corridors and border regions with significant cross-border movement.
Public health experts say Kenya’s experience during the COVID-19 pandemic has helped improve disease surveillance systems, emergency coordination and rapid response capacity. However, they caution that continued vigilance remains essential due to the country’s strategic position as a regional transport and trade hub.
The Ministry of Health has urged citizens to remain calm, rely on official information sources and immediately report any symptoms associated with Ebola, including fever, severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting and unexplained bleeding.
For now, Kenya remains Ebola-free, but authorities are leaving little to chance as the regional outbreak continues to evolve.
With thousands of travellers crossing East African borders daily and the outbreak still active in neighbouring countries, Kenya’s preparedness efforts could prove crucial in preventing the deadly virus from gaining a foothold within its borders.
