One of Latin America’s most feared criminal masterminds is dead.
Héctor Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, widely known as Niño Guerrero, the notorious leader of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, was killed during a military operation coordinated between the United States and Venezuelan authorities, according to an announcement by Donald Trump.
The operation brings a dramatic end to the years-long manhunt for a man who transformed a prison gang into one of the most powerful criminal networks in the Western Hemisphere.
Trump described the mission as a decisive strike against organized crime, saying U.S. forces successfully targeted Guerrero after extensive intelligence gathering and cooperation with regional partners. Venezuelan officials later confirmed the gang leader had been killed during security operations targeting criminal groups.
For years, Niño Guerrero was regarded as the face of the Tren de Aragua’s rapid expansion across Latin America. Under his leadership, the organization allegedly built a vast criminal empire stretching from Venezuela into Colombia, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, and other countries. Authorities linked the group to drug trafficking, human smuggling, extortion, kidnappings, and violent racketeering activities.
What made Guerrero’s rise particularly extraordinary was where it began.
Born into poverty in Venezuela, he climbed through the ranks of the criminal underworld before turning Venezuela’s notorious Tocorón Prison into the command center of his operations. Investigators claimed that despite being incarcerated, Guerrero effectively controlled the prison and continued directing criminal activities across multiple countries.
His grip on power became legendary. Reports from the prison described a bizarre reality in which inmates enjoyed amenities rarely associated with incarceration, while gang operations flourished beyond prison walls.
That reign began to crumble in 2023 when Venezuelan security forces launched a major operation to retake Tocorón Prison. Guerrero escaped before authorities arrived, triggering an international manhunt that placed him among the most wanted fugitives in the Americas.
The United States later filed criminal charges against him and offered a substantial reward for information leading to his capture.
Security analysts say Guerrero’s death represents a major symbolic victory against transnational organized crime. However, they caution that the Tren de Aragua may continue operating despite the loss of its founder and most recognizable leader.
Criminal organizations often adapt quickly after the removal of senior figures, and investigators are now closely watching whether the gang fragments or appoints a successor.
For many across Latin America, the fall of Niño Guerrero marks the end of a criminal career that rose from the streets of Venezuela to influence criminal networks across an entire continent. Whether his death weakens the Tren de Aragua permanently or sparks a new chapter in the gang’s history remains to be seen.
