Dog Food Sold in 11 States Recalled Over Salmonella Contamination Risk

A frozen raw dog food product sold across 11 U.S. states has been recalled after testing found Salmonella contamination, prompting consumers to stop feeding the product to their pets immediately.

Pet owners are being urged to check their freezers after Oma’s Pride, a Connecticut-based pet food company, voluntarily recalled one lot of its frozen raw dog food over Salmonella contamination.

The recall involves 639 bags of Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe, a 6-pound frozen product distributed through retail and wholesale outlets as well as direct-to-consumer online orders. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall after the company reported the contamination.

Which dog food is affected?

The recalled product is sold in a 6-pound gusseted stand-up pouch containing 12 individually wrapped, 8-ounce vacuum-sealed portions.

Consumers should look for the following information:

The FDA says no other Oma’s Pride products, sizes or lots are included in this recall.

Recalled food was sold in 11 states

The affected lot was distributed in Arizona, California, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The company distributed the product through retail and wholesale accounts and also shipped it directly to customers who placed online orders.

That means pet owners who purchased raw dog food online should not assume they are unaffected simply because they did not buy it from a physical store.

Salmonella can affect both dogs and people

Salmonella is a major concern because contaminated pet food can pose a risk not only to animals that consume it but also to people who handle the food.

Dogs that become infected may develop symptoms including lethargy, diarrhea, fever, vomiting, reduced appetite and abdominal discomfort. Some animals can carry Salmonella without showing obvious signs of illness, potentially spreading the bacteria through their feces or contaminated surroundings.

People can also become infected after handling contaminated pet food or touching surfaces exposed to it. Human symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever.

The risk is particularly important when raw pet food is prepared or handled in household kitchens, where bacteria can potentially contaminate hands, counters, bowls and other surfaces.

What pet owners should do now

Consumers who have the recalled lot should stop feeding it to their dogs immediately.

The FDA and company guidance calls for the product to be safely discarded. Pet owners should also thoroughly wash and sanitize food bowls, storage containers, measuring cups and other items that may have come into contact with the recalled food.

Hands should be washed carefully after handling the product or anything that may have been contaminated.

Company launches investigation

Oma’s Pride said it is taking the finding seriously and is conducting a further investigation to determine more about the contamination.

The company said the recall was initiated as part of its commitment to food safety and transparency.

At this stage, the recall is limited to the identified lot of Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe. There is no indication in the FDA notice that all Oma’s Pride products are affected.

For pet owners, the immediate priority is therefore to check the lot number before feeding the product and avoid using any bag identified as BB012729.

The FDA continues to monitor pet food recalls as part of its animal-food safety responsibilities.
