Keumbu Rally Descends Into Chaos After Suspected Goons Disrupt Linda Mwananchi Tour
KEUMBU, KISII – A planned Linda Mwananchi public rally in Keumbu, Kisii County, ended in chaos on Friday after a group of suspected goons disrupted the event, forcing supporters to flee and interrupting a high-profile political tour through the Gusii region.
The disturbance occurred as opposition leaders addressed residents during a campaign aimed at engaging citizens on governance, the rising cost of living, constitutional reforms and accountability.
Eyewitnesses said the atmosphere changed suddenly when a group of men reportedly began hurling stones toward the convoy and the crowd. The incident triggered panic, sending supporters scrambling for safety as security personnel moved in to restore order.
Several vehicles were damaged during the confrontation, while some participants sustained injuries. The full extent of the injuries had not been officially confirmed by the time of publication.
Journalists Caught in the Violence
Members of the press covering the event were also caught up in the chaos.
A K24 TV news crew reported that one of its journalists was injured after the team came under attack while broadcasting live from the rally. The station also said one of its television cameras was destroyed and its news vehicle vandalized, forcing an abrupt end to the live coverage.
The incident has drawn concern from media stakeholders, who have repeatedly called for greater protection of journalists covering political events across the country.
Opposition Leaders Continue Tour
Despite the disruption in Keumbu, the Linda Mwananchi delegation continued with its scheduled tour across Kisii County.
The team included former Chief Justice David Maraga, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, and several Members of Parliament and county leaders.
The leaders later addressed supporters at other stops, where they reiterated calls for improved governance, economic reforms and respect for democratic freedoms.
Investigations Expected
Following the incident, leaders allied to the Linda Mwananchi movement condemned the violence, describing it as an attempt to intimidate supporters and interfere with peaceful political activities.
However, they did not present evidence identifying those responsible for the disruption.
As of publication, police had not released an official statement identifying suspects or confirming who organized the attackers. No arrests had been publicly announced, and investigations into the incident are expected to continue.
Renewed Debate on Political Violence
The Keumbu incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over political intolerance as Kenya moves closer to the 2027 General Election.
Analysts say attacks targeting political gatherings and members of the media threaten constitutional rights, including freedom of assembly and press freedom. They have urged authorities to conduct impartial investigations and ensure those responsible are held accountable, regardless of political affiliation.
For residents who witnessed the confrontation, what was expected to be a routine political rally instead became another reminder of the challenges facing peaceful democratic engagement in Kenya.
