France and Morocco are set to clash in one of the most anticipated quarter-final matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with both nations eyeing a place in the last four of the tournament.

France reached the quarter-finals after edging Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16, while Morocco impressed with a commanding 3-0 victory over Canada. The encounter also rekindles memories of their 2022 World Cup semi-final, which France won 2-0.

Morocco will be without midfielder Ismael Saibari, who has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury. His absence is a setback for coach Walid Regragui as the Atlas Lions seek another historic World Cup achievement after becoming the first African nation to reach a semi-final in 2022.

Away from the action on the pitch, FIFA’s Head of Refereeing, Pierluigi Collina, has defended the tournament’s officiating following criticism over recent knockout-stage decisions. Collina dismissed allegations of bias after Argentina’s victory over Egypt, insisting that FIFA referees remain independent and that VAR decisions are made strictly according to the Laws of the Game.

The appointment of an all-Argentine officiating team, led by referee Facundo Tello, for the France-Morocco quarter-final has also sparked discussion among fans because Argentina remains in the tournament. However, FIFA has given no indication that the appointment breaches its refereeing policies.

The winner of the France-Morocco showdown will book a place in the World Cup semi-finals and face the winner of the quarter-final between Spain and Belgium.
