We Ain’t Done Yet… Expect Another One.
A police officer was killed and two other law enforcement officers were injured after responding to a disturbance call that turned into a deadly shooting in Northeast Ohio late Sunday night.
The incident occurred in the city of Rittman in Wayne County at approximately 9:30 p.m. local time. According to Wayne County Sheriff Tom Ballinger, officers were dispatched to a residence following reports of a disturbance involving gunfire. Shortly after arriving at the scene, they came under fire.
One officer from the Rittman Police Department was fatally shot while carrying out his duties. Two additional officers suffered gunshot injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities said their conditions have not been publicly disclosed.
The violence claimed four lives in total. In addition to the fallen officer, the suspected gunman and two other individuals were killed during the incident. A K-9 with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office was also injured in the exchange of gunfire.
Following the shooting, law enforcement agencies from across the region responded to secure the neighborhood. Tactical teams, drones and investigators spent several hours processing the scene and gathering evidence.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has assumed responsibility for the investigation, which is standard practice in fatal officer-involved incidents. Detectives are working to establish a timeline of events and determine exactly what led to the deadly confrontation.
Authorities have not yet identified the victims or the suspect, pending notification of their families. Investigators have also not released a possible motive, saying the investigation remains active.
The shooting has drawn condolences from police departments and public officials across Ohio, many of whom paid tribute to the fallen officer’s service and expressed support for the injured officers, their families and the Rittman community.
Officials are expected to release additional information as the investigation continues.
